Cathar Castles Near the Roussillon: Guide, Anecdotes & Map

Perched on the ridges of the Corbières, these fortresses once guarded the former border. From Perpignan or the Roussillon plain, they’re perfect for a sea & mountain getaway — with, as a bonus, Maury/Fitou wines and the Galamus Gorges.

Quéribus Castle (Cucugnan, Aude) — “the last stronghold”

History in brief. Listed as a Historic Monument, Quéribus is one of the “Five Sons of Carcassonne.” After Montségur fell in 1244, it sheltered Cathar believers; in 1255 the fortress surrendered to Olivier de Termes. Altitude ~728 m, panoramic views toward the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. Highlights. Polygonal keep, vaulted halls whipped by the tramontane wind; direct line of sight to Peyrepertuse for signaling. Location. On a summit above Maury and Cucugnan. Approx. coordinates 42.8353, 2.6197. Food & activities. Tastings of Maury AOP (fortified wines and “Maury Sec”), sourdough bread & ancient grains at Cucugnan’s “Maîtres de mon Moulin”; balcony hikes above the vineyards.

Peyrepertuse Castle (Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse) — the “celestial Carcassonne”

History in brief. A vast fortress clinging to a limestone spine (~800 m), also among the “Five Sons.” Ancient occupation attested; major medieval expansion, control of mountain passes and optical communication with Quéribus. Highlights. Two enclosures and the iconic “Saint-Louis staircase” leading to the Sant-Jordi keep. Location. Approx. coordinates 42.8706, 2.5572. Food & activities. Swimming & dry canyoning at the Galamus Gorges (local GR hiking loops), producers of Côtes du Roussillon and Corbières nearby.

Puilaurens Castle (Lapradelle-Puilaurens) — sentinel of the Fenouillèdes

History in brief. Perched high above the Boulzane valley, it controlled access toward the Roussillon. Classic mountain architecture, remarkably preserved enclosure. Location. Approx. coordinates 42.8039, 2.2994. Food & activities. Shaded trails through Fenouillèdes forests, wineries of Haut-Fenouillèdes and Corbières.

Aguilar Castle (Tuchan) — the eagle of the Corbières

History in brief. Built in the 12th century, overlooking valleys around Tuchan and Paziols. Joined the “Five Sons” system from the 13th century, later a royal stronghold. Location. Approx. coordinates 42.8906, 2.7469. Food & activities. In the heart of Fitou AOP and Corbières country (Mont Tauch cooperative + independent estates), MTB/road loops around Mont Tauch.

Bonus in the Roussillon: Salses Fortress (Salses-le-Château)

Good to know. Not a “Cathar” castle but a Catalan fortress (1497–1504), built by the Catholic Monarchs to secure the former border. A masterpiece bridging medieval castles and early modern fortifications — and only 20–30 minutes from Perpignan.
