A bit of history (without the dust)
-
-
Pioneering resort for both skiing and science: the Odeillo solar furnace (CNRS), the largest in the world, has been operating since 1969. Guided visits are possible.
-
High-performance training hub: the CNEA (National Altitude Training Centre) opened in 1967 to prepare athletes for the Mexico Olympic Games; since then, many elite athletes have trained here.

At the table: Catalan mountain flavours

Market side: Cerdagne products (honey, berries, local meats).
-
Nearby visits (30–40 min radius that’s worth it)
-
-
Odeillo – Solar Furnace (CNRS): high-tech icon and guaranteed photo spot.
-
Mont-Louis: Vauban citadel listed by UNESCO, Sun King’s mountain stronghold.
-
Villefranche-de-Conflent & Fort Libéria: another Vauban duo, also UNESCO-listed.
-
The Train Jaune: 63 km of panoramas, including the Gisclard bridge and more.
-
Practical tips (to dodge traffic jams and dragons)
-
-
Seasons: snow from December to March/April depending on the year; ideal summer from June to September for lakes (watch out for afternoon storms).
-
Getting around: combine car + Train Jaune for a very photogenic “slow travel” day.
-
Weather & safety: off-piste, stay humble; in summer, start early for lake hikes. (The Pyrenees test your ego as much as your legs.)
